Butterflies
After visiting the Natural History Museum, the kids wanted
to order some caterpillars so that we could watch them make the chrysalis and
turn into butterflies. I have to say, it was a pretty amazing transformation to
watch. We received the caterpillars in a
plastic jar that had food at the bottom. Within 5 days they completely turned
into chrysalis You then take a safety pin and pin the thin tissue like paper to
the inside of the butterfly habitat. On Wednesday we had three of the four butterflies.
One of the cocoons fell off the paper and I didn’t think it would make it, but
we when we came home Thursday afternoon he was a butterfly flying around. One
of the butterflies keep going into the cup of sugar water and he eventually
died, we found him this morning. We decided to let them go in our yard this
morning, just so they wouldn’t die. They were happy to fly away. It was a great
learning experience and the kids enjoyed it!
I tried to take pictures of the butterflies as the flew away but they were really fast!
They are so beautiful.. What a great project. Thank you for sharing!!
